Right now we are in process of planning two big vacations this year. We will spend spring break in Las Vegas for my brother-in-law's wedding, and then we have a family reunion this summer in Nauvoo, IL. Both trips look like they're going to be a lot of fun!

Congrats to my sister on the newest member of the extended Palmer clan - my niece Jenna is two weeks old today! We're planning a trip out to Mississippi to see them for Memorial Day weekend.

Karate Kid

Bryan started karate classes a few weeks ago. He's pretty excited, and is very diligent about practicing every day. Brooke opted to take gymnastics, and has been learning a lot too.

Michelle just ordered Bryan's uniform online.

November Update

Yes, my trip went well. I stayed in Tel Aviv for two weeks, but I got to tour Jerusalem and the Dead Sea one weekend. I was still coughing and wheezing a lot though, so I went to the doctor upon my return. I still wasn't getting any better, so today I went back to the doctor and got a diagnosis of pneumonia. Ugh.

Okay, now I've got a REAL full-time job again! For about a week now, I've been a Solutions Engineer (a step up from my previous electronics tech position) for a security company here in the Dallas area. Next week I'll fly out to Tel Aviv for training.

That's right, yesterday was my first paid day of working since I was laid off in June. Of course, I wasn't exactly well paid... I substitute taught a third-grade class for the afternoon.

I'm officially signed on as a sub for two different districts in the Fort Worth area now. Meanwhile, the hunt for a full-time job goes on.

Yes, unfortunately the rumors are true. I was among the latest victims of corporate downsizing this morning, and thus my plans to get a teaching position is D/FW are somewhat.. accelerated.

Michelle and I have decided that the time has come for us to move our family back up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We moved down here to Houston nearly four years ago, when I was offered a position at Schlumberger. I've asked about getting a transfer up there within the company, but it doesn't look like that'll be a possibility right now. Therefore, I've decided to get my teaching certification, and I'm looking for a teaching post in the D/FW metroplex right now.

Of course, there are downsides to moving, the biggest of which will be the loss of all the friends we have made here over the last four years, especially for Brooke and Bryan. Therefore, we came up with a plan to let them keep in touch with their friends here after we move away. Brooke and Bryan each have their own email addresses as of today, and also their own blogs. These are for each of them to post their own news, thoughts, and pictures. Brooke's can be found at http://brooke-news.blogspot.com, and Bryan's is at http://bryanscoolnews.blogspot.com.

Michelle's thumb: continued

Michelle had surgery on her thumb on Thursday, April 16. She had nerve grafts and skin grafts taken from her wrist. It doesn't look pretty right now, but the doctor says it's progressing well. She has posted some pictures on her Facebook page. Her mother was here for six days to help out.

The same day as the surgery, I took Brooke to the orthodontist, where she got braces on her lower teeth (she already has them on her upper teeth). She is almost done being a Brownie, and will bridge over to Junior Girl Scouts next month.

Bryan currently holds the dubious honor of being the healthiest person in the house. At first I felt bad having nothing to report about him, but since I'm listing everyone else's health problems, he's really doing just fine.

Emma had a couple of urinary tract infections this month, so she is going in for testing this week, to see if she has the same reflux problem that Brooke had a couple years ago. She has started pushing herself up on her hands, so it shouldn't be too much longer before she starts crawling.

Michelle's thumb

I was just chatting with Eric and I realized we hadn't told anyone else what had happened... I'm duplicating here what I already posted at insanityinc.net...

Last night, Michelle was trying to lock the bedroom window when the pane shattered and sliced off a piece of her left thumb and cut into the artery. I had just left for a cub scout pack meeting, so she called me home and then went to the neighbors, who called 911.

Michelle's visiting teacher came and took the kids while I took Michelle to the ER, and the neighbors cleaned up the glass and blood in our house. She got a whole lot of stitches in there, and she'll need to see a plastic surgeon to get skin grafts and whatever else it takes to put her thumb back together.

She's in a lot of pain - multiple prescriptions take the edge off, but that's about it. She can't drive right now because of the medications, and can't help with dishes or baths or anything like that because of the bandages.

I don't think there's really anything any of you can do to help, except pray for her. I'll try to keep you informed as we know more.

Yeah, I joined Facebook. I found out that I was the only member of Insanity Inc who was not already there. However, I refuse to get sucked into all the timewasting that goes on there. I plan to use it to get back in touch with old friends, and stay in touch with current friends. I won't play the online games, or write the inane lists. As far as pictures and other updates on what I'm doing, I'll still be using my blogs.

Yesterday afternoon, after much struggling, Emma managed to work her way from her back onto her belly. She can't quite hold her head up yet, so she wasn't to happy with the outcome, but she persevered anyway and practiced her newfound rolling skills for the rest of the evening. Which meant we had to keep moving her back onto her back, over and over and over again, just so she could do it again. My guess is that she'll now be much more motivated to hold her head up off the ground.

Yesterday, we welcomed the newest member of Jared Palmer Unlimited, a little female person we call Emma. She was born yesterday at 1:47 in the afternoon, weighing in at 7 lbs. 1 oz. We brought her home today at 5:30. Hooray for little people!

All the people are fine, the dog is fine. The house is fine. The shed and the fence, not so much. Our shed blew away during the storm (ripping two bolts out of the ground, and leaving parts of the shed attached to the other two). The shed knocked down the fence on its way out, including a small tree behind the fence, and an old fence just behind that. All the yard equipment, baby stroller and crib, bicycles, and other miscellaneous items that were stored in the shed somehow stayed put on the ground, and hopefully the water damage to that stuff won't be too bad. We lost power for about a day and a half.

Yeah, I know. August was a slow month as far as new announcements. Bryan had a good birthday party, and just last weekend we all drove up to Dallas for his cousin Gage's first birthday. We returned home on Labor Day. Hurricane Gustav is currently pounding away at Louisiana, but we're well out of the path of destruction.

On Saturday we all went to a charity softball tournament. I played with "Rhythm and Blues," and Brooke was our honorary bat girl. We did not go back on Sunday for the team picture and the championship game, but the coach told me afterward that we had remained undefeated until the finals, where we took second place.

If anyone is keeping track of my goals with me, I've checked off three more in the last few weeks - learning all the hymns in the hymnbook, learning all the Primary songs in the Children's Songbook, and reading a Jane Austen novel.

Soundtrack of my Life

This is a fun little exercise that I decided to try, since I've got an iPod. EDIT: I ran it again, March 13.

Here's the idea: set your iPod to shuffle. The first 18 songs make up The Soundtrack of Your Life.

The problem with these things is the presumption that anyone is interested in the results, but off we go anyway.

Opening Credits: "A Home" Dixie Chicks ...not a very auspicious beginning. Hmmm... Take 2: "River Tricks Early" from the Firefly soundtrack. Dark, mysterious instrumental music. I like this beginning...

Waking Up: "Heartbreak Town" Dixie Chicks ...okay, now this is downright depressing. "Star Wars Cantina" by Mark Jonathan Davis (based on Barry Manilow's Copacabana). Okay, this is fun!

First Day At School: "Hole in my Head" Dixie Chicks ...ha! But seriously, what's with all the Dixie Chicks? "Far Far" by Yael Naim. Strange, yet strangely appropriate.

Falling In Love: "More Holiness Give Me" USU Choir ...that's romantic? "When I Think About Angels" by Jamie O'Neal. Yeah, I think this is a great Falling in Love song for me. It fits.

Fight Song: "Firefly Main Theme" Joss Whedon ...awesome. I couldn't have picked a better fight song myself. "Saved / Isn't Home? / Reavers" from the Firefly soundtrack. Well, I if I couldn't get the main theme, at least I got something from Firefly. The "Isn't Home?" section in the middle is a bit too soft for a fight song, but when you get to the Reavers at the end...

Breaking Up: "Where We Belong" Jamie O'Neal ...this is actually a love song, and it's pretty pathetic if you listen to it as a breakup song. "I Got My Baby" by Faith Hill. Another love song as a breakup song. Ironic, but it works.

Prom: "Because It's Spring" Primary Children ...well, prom does happen in the spring... "Baby I Love Your Way" by Big Mountain. This one fits because it came off a "Greatest Hits of the 90's" album. And I think it may well have been played at my prom...

Life: "This is God's House" Primary Children ...I have a very religious life? "Prolog" from Les Miserables... this is the part with Jean Valjean in prison. And yet, oddly, this works for me. Perhaps it would've fit better in the Mental Breakdown category, but maybe my life is one big mental breakdown... of course, Valjean also gets out of prison in this piece.

Mental Breakdown: "Once You've Loved Somebody" Dixie Chicks ...I suppose this could cause a mental breakdown. "If I Fall You're Going Down With Me" by the Dixie Chicks. Why do I keep getting love songs for the Mental Breakdown? Is this a message of some sort?

Driving: "To Be With You" Mr. Big ...ummm... okay. "My Joy is Full" from the Book of Mormon seminary video... lots of "Hallelujahs" in this piece. Hallelujah, I can drive!

Flashback: "Could It Be Me" Charlie Daniels ...unless I'm having a flashback of Moses, this really doesn't work. The song is from "Prince of Egypt." "Firm in the Faith of Christ Theme" from the same seminary video. This one is all instrumental, so it could certainly work over a flashback scene. Particularly over a spiritual one, like while I made my missionary scrapbook or something.

Getting Back Together: "Never Say Die" Dixie Chicks ...sure, that works. "Royal Blue" by Henry Mancini. This is off my Pink Panther album. Nice romantic little jazz piece. My iPod is really good at this!

Wedding: "Tortured, Tangled Hearts" Dixie Chicks ...oh dear. There are indeed wedding references in this song, but not the kind I want. "Press Forward, Saints" by the USU choir. You know, the organ in this one really could work as a wedding march! Of course, we didn't actually have a wedding march...

Birth of Child: "Tears/River's Eyes" Firefly ...this is a sweet piece of instrumental music. Very lovely. "Numb" by my friend Lisa Jenkins. The only way I see this one fitting is in reference perhaps to Michelle's epidural?

Final Battle: "The Lord Gave Me a Temple" Primary Children ...say what? "To Bring Them to Thee" from the Old Testament seminary video. Again, a church song for my Final Battle. I think this is another message.

Death Scene: "Javert's Selbstmord" Les Miserables ...German for "Javert's Suicide." Apparently I'm going to jump off a bridge. "Forever" by Lisa Jenkins. I definitely think I like this Death better than the suicide one.

Funeral Song: "Bringing Out the Elvis" Faith Hill ...is he going to be at my funeral? "Breakfast at Tiffany's" by Deep Blue Something. I'm really trying here, but I just can't make this fit. I guess I should take it as a good sign that my iPod can't come up with a funeral song.

End Credits: "Whoomp! (There It Is)" Tag Team ...oh yeah. "Our Father's Plan" from the Old Testament seminary video. Okay, I cheated on this one. I didn't want Shania Twain's "Leaving is the Only Way Out" to have the last word on my life, so I skipped ahead to the next one.

I think I might try this again sometime... after I've removed the primary songs from my iPod. Yeah, obviously I just did that. Overall, I think it came out a bit better than the first time.

I've done another major overhaul on my Goals page. Several items were added, dropped, and/or amended. I'm still working on a few tweaks to the pages themselves, but the list of goals is current as it stands.

Learn all the songs in the Children's Songbook
Learn to speak Spanish

Race Updated

I managed to get in and update my goals page to show that I just completed my 16th accomplishment on Saturday, competing in a charity race. Well, I walked in the non-competitive part, but I still participated. I walked 5k in 56 minutes and 45 seconds. I also managed to raise $130 toward breast cancer research.

I still have some old pictures from August and September that haven't made it in to the calendar yet, and several videos that need to be cut down in order to meet youtube's time limits.

This last week has been very busy at work - just finished the end of another production month. The kids had their Primary presentation at church yesterday, and both did their parts very well. I also got another calling - I'll be teaching the Elders' Quorum once a month. Frankly, I'd rather teach just about anywhere but Elders' Quorum, but we'll see how it goes.

Bad News Bryan

Last night, I was cleaning out the fridge and had left the crisper drawers sitting out on the kitchen floor. A little later, Bryan was climbing on a stepladder, and fell off onto one of the drawers, cracking the plactic and cutting a nasty slice in his foot. I didn't get a good look at the cut itself, but the amount of blood on the floor gave me a pretty good idea what has happened. Michelle manged to get him to an urgent care clinic just before they closed up shop, and so he was bandaged up and home again within a couple hours. He's on antibiotics to prevent infection; he isn't allowed to run or jump at all, and he's home from school until Wednesday.

In other news... I'm still taking donations for the Race for the Cure, Comic of the Week is updated, and Brooke went to a friend's birthday party on Friday.

So, we went to Schlitterbahn on Saturday. Next time, we'll use more sunscreen. Comic of the Week is new today - I've decided to branch out from Turning to the Dork Side and use a few other comics, though so far I'm still going to stick with the Star Wars theme there. I also completed another one of my Big 50 goals today - I finished my twelfth biography in one year.

Updating remotely for Labor Day weekend... Michelle's brother Jeremy had a new baby on Thursday, so we came up to let the kids meet their new cousin Gage. For the website the week, I've got the September calendar up now, and I got the new Turning to the Dork Side comic, even though I'm a few hours earlier than normal. I've done a few more additions on the goals page, and have one or two more still in the works there. I also learned how to copy videos from my camera to my computer, and I've started uploading a few to YouTube. I added a link to my page there.

Announcement! Brooke lost her second tooth on Saturday. She now has a big gap front and center, on the bottom row. The first permanent tooth is just starting to poke out. I'll get pictures up soon... as soon as I charge the camera's battery...

I've added a new link. One of the things I've always wanted to do is to write a musical. I decided to use a blog to keep that project organized. In those rare times when I actually work on the project, I'll post updates there, and occasionally ask for feedback. If there's something in particular I want to draw your attention to, I'll post it here as well.

If you can see this, you've found the new homepage for Jared Palmer Unlimited. Most of the layout is similar to the previous homepage, but this way I'll be better able to tweak it as much as I want. The main visual difference is this space you're reading now, which I'll use to announce any changes to the site, or any other announcements I feel like making. I've also changed the format of the calender slightly, and added the Dork Side comic strip to the bottom of the page. Hopefully, those should be updated weekly.
